The Fox and Hare

Image
My spin on Aesop's fable of the Fox & Hare.  Monotype Print, (1/1) with 24k gold leaf.   One warm afternoon Fox napped and woke on a sun soaked slope to find Hare watching her intently. “Why do you stare little friend?” Fox asked.  "Are you really as cunning, as smart, as others say?” Hare asked.  Fox rolled on her back and thought for awhile before replying, “Perhaps I could show you just how cunning I am little friend? You are cordially invited for early dinner, where we shall continue this conversation. Come as you are, come now if you like?” So Hare, filled with curiosity, followed Fox  home. Fox though, had nothing at home to eat except? Now Hare exclaimed, “I have learned too late that your cunning is not about intelligence but unjust trickery that would sacrifice the innocent to fill you own belly.” The fable illustrates- The gullible and uninformed often pay a high price for recklessly indulging their curiosity.

Sacred Circle "Natchez"

Image
Sacred Circle "Natchez", original digital print. Visit Brian Fisher Studio, Studio #2, on the 2019 VIVA Holiday Art Studio Tour , Dec. 14-15, 10am-4pm to see "Natchez"! From the whorls of our fingertips, the irises of our eyes, to our cells and the egg that gave each of us life, we are manifestations of the circle. My print images about circle reflect the symbolic nature of the shape. Their names reference the sacred sites, temples, cathedrals that more often than not were built and built again upon ancient and already sacred sites. My personal references for "Natchez" are the mounds, as seen from above, the Natchez Native Americans built as foundations for their temple structures on the lower Mississippi River and the Magnolia trees in blossom I saw for the first time when visiting that beautiful part of our world.

The Persephone Cycle, Part 2

Image
Left: Plate for Persephone cycle series of prints  Right: "Persephone Cycle II" Part 2: The Myth of Persephone and Demeter When Zeus could no longer ignore the suffering of mankind.  He sent Hermes as emissary to negotiate Persephone’s return to her mother.  Hades reluctantly agreed to her release and in parting gave Persephone, who had eaten nothing since her abduction, a pomegranate.  This apparent act of kindness was instead a deception and curse.  Anyone who eats the food of Hades must remain in his realm.  Persephone ate only a few seeds but that was enough for Hades to make the legitimate claim that she must remain with him. Finally, Rhea, the mother of Zeus, Demeter and Hades, proposed a compromise. Persephone would have to stay with Hades in the Underworld for six months each year. The rest of the year, she would be allowed to ascend to Earth and live with her mother.  Hades would have Persephone as a consort and Demeter

Studios, Cloth Paper Scissors

Image
‘Studios’ magazine featured four Vashon artists and their studios in its Summer  edition. My studio was chosen as the cover.  The following is how I describe my present creative space. I am a Print, Paint and Assemblage artist.  The images I make have their origin in story. The story may be personally relevant but often falls within the realm of myth.  The interpretation of myth and visual exploration of story is informed by and evolves in my approach to Monotype print.   I think of Monotype as a lively conversation of knife with paper, ink with plate, and paper and plate with press.  The exploration of these simple materials, mediums and tools provide an exciting way to discover imagery that I may subsequently interpret in the more traditional medium of oil on canvas or include as critical components of my assemblage work. In addition to my press work I am currently exploring another Monotype process utilizing mild steel plates that are composed, cut and rusted to muslin.
